Interview: Humanhood

How has the engagement with physicists changed your practice, inspired/stimulated new ideas and ways of working?

“As artists and movement practitioners whose practice is inspired in physics and Eastern mysticism, we are interested in mix-field research. How perspectives can come together to enrich each other experiences and create a more holistic and organic way to understand and live in this world.

The most direct way in which working with physicists has inspired our practice is while being hands on and having live interactions in the studio. Ideas are shared in a spontaneous way and due to the nature of choreography, which requires dancers performing the movement, sharing ideas with direct feedback and applying them directly afterwards allowed for richer and creative compositions. The magnitude and rare ideas that physicists deal with in their everyday life is a fascinating inspiration for movement.

How has this impacted your audiences and those who you reach?

“Our audiences perceive the inspirations behind our work through both the live performances and our workshops. It opens their mind knowing that there is no fixed narrative but instead themselves make interpretations. Our pieces speak about the Universe and the wonders of energy; the interpretations of those who experience our work are an extension of the work itself.

How has working with a scientist changed your understanding of your career?

“We believe through art, and specially dance, we can awaken deep connections and understandings about who are we and what is our potential as human beings. Working with scientists is a result of our interest to share ideas and discoveries about the world and the reality we live in. Working with scientists had expanded our vision as artists and the way we want to impact the world.

Do you feel that your processes and outcomes can inspire/further the field of physics?

“One of the most important way we feel artists, in particular dancers, can inspire the field of physics is through open minded interactions and researching the potential of the mind to command the body. How energy moves matter, how thought moves the body to create emotion: e-motion/energy in motion. The whole universe is a cosmic dance, and in dance we are connected not only intellectually but wholly to the answers we are looking for.”
